The first exploratory meeting for the Newton Park SRA was proposed and held by Ward 7 Councillor, Brendon Pegram on 12 May 2023:
Good morning Business Owner,
You may have heard talks about a SRA (Special Ratings Area) that I would like to get started in the Newton Park area. For now, we are meeting with businesses first before taking it out to the residents within the designated area selected. The suggested designated area would be from Hurd Street to Burt Drive and from Disa Road to First Ave/CJ Langenhoven.
I am looking for a team who is willing to be involved in this process and eventually run with it.
The reason I would like to get this started is because Newton Park is the business hub of Port Elizabeth and it seems to be deteriorating. There has been an influx of homeless people as well as petty crimes happening in and around the area. The SRA is an added service that the area would receive and would initially focus on security and cleansing.
A SRA may be the only way we can revive the Newton Park area and get it back to being the area of business and pleasure. Please forward this email to business owners that fall within this designated area so that they too can attend this meeting.
We will be hosting a meeting explaining the what exactly a SRA is about, the benefits and how you can get involved.
Date: 12 May 2023
Time: 10:00 to 11:30
Venue: Newton Park Library Auditorium (Cnr of 4th Ave and Hurd Str)Hope to see you there.
Kind Regards,
Brendon Pegram
